How do Kids do on a Bareboat Charter?
Does having children in your "crew" leave you at the dock? Nope. Ok, so your friends WILL call you nuts. They will implore you to reconsider. Suddenly your wife's (or husband's) parents will offer to let the kids stay with them, but why? As with most things unknown, the thought of little ones on a boat for a week (or more) scares the pants off of them. Hey, it may even scare you a bit. But it shouldn't. Kids adapt more quickly than adults do. Even the shy ones. Once they get aboard they become better sailing companions than your long time friends or family chartering with you (soon to be ex-friends and ex family, just kidding!). The Mayday Crew even has a 3 year-old Jr. First Mate on the crew. She manages the anchor light, has the best memory of all of us and is probably the strongest swimmer (not that the rest of the crew are slouches). The little ones love to keep the safety rules enforced! Kids, when given responsibility on a yacht, take to it like a fish to.. OK I'll say it.. water. They become as purposeful as they become imaginative. It is easy to fall back on toys.. but fight the urge. There is plenty to keep them more than occupied. Happy even!
